Nearly whole school walked for Jamie Waugh and MD on Monday
Some walked, some strolled and chatted, and other students took off at a run on Monday at Elora Public School.
Students were doing their annual walk for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in honour of their classmate and friend, Jamie Waugh.
Jamie’s dad, Jerry, thanked all the parents and people in the community who support Jamie, 9, in the yearly event.
Larry Van Wyck and Jamie’s mom, Donna Van Wyck, and others who support Jamie will be heading to London on Friday for the annual Jesse's Journey.
That began when John and Sherene Davidson learned that their middle son, Jesse, had Duchenne. They charted a life changing course for themselves - setting out to raise research funds to find the elusive cure.
Larry Van Wyck said the London walk will be 33km, the same distance John Davidson walked across Canada to raise funds for research to fight the disease. That event is to raise money for the children with MD and also to help their families.
Elora Public School principal Steve Viveiros said that there are just over 500 students at the school and 490 of them would walk the three kilometres around the school track to raise funds.
Jamie himself raised $615. the school’s final tally was just over $1,100. As well, organizers also thanked the Bank of Nova Scotia, in Fergus, which is matching the contributions from the school with a cheque for over $1,100.
