Municipal council nomination period open May 1 to Aug. 21
ONTARIO – With less than nine months to go until the next municipal election, dates have been released for those looking to run for council.
The first day to file a nomination is May 1, and Aug. 21 is the final nomination day.
Nominations must include 25 signatures of endorsement.
Candidates must be Canadian citizens and at least 18 years old. They or their spouse must live in or own/ rent land in the municipality in which they’re running.
They must pay a $100 fee to run for a position as councillor and $200 to run for mayor.
On Aug. 24, candidates are set to be certified.
The voters’ list will be finalized on Sept. 1 and voting day is set for Oct. 25.
Municipal elections are held every four years, on the fourth Monday of October.
Unlike in provincial and federal elections, municipal candidates are not elected to represent a political party.
