MTO contemplates new Highway 6 bridge over 401

PUSLINCH – The Ministry of Transportation is moving ahead with the third phase of improvements to Highways 6 and 401 between Guelph and Hamilton with a preliminary design and class environmental assessment study of the area.

The project will address the replacement of the Highway 6/Brock Road bridge over the 401, which is nearing the end of its service life, and examine interim improvements to the interchange.

“Reasonable alternatives to address interim interchange improvements will be developed and evaluated leading to the selection of a preferred alternative,” states the notice of study commencement included in Puslinch council’s Oct. 29 agenda.

The ministry states it will hold a virtual public information centre to collect feedback but did not identify a date.

Once the study is complete, the project will move to detailed design and construction, which is expected to begin in 2027 and last for two years.

Mayor James Seeley said he didn’t understand talk of an interim bridge use.

“Are we building a bridge we’re going to knock down?” he asked.

Councillor John Sepulis asked staff to request the MTO delegate to council to keep them apprised.
