MAPLETON – A new sign shared by the Moorefield Optimists and Township of Mapleton will be installed in April at the corner of McGivern Street and Ball Avenue in Moorefield.

It will be at the entrance to the Moorefield Optimist Club, the Maryborough Community Centre and Moorefield Park, on a township road allowance.

Public works director Jamie Morgan told council the Optimists are covering the majority of the sign’s cost, including its installation and maintenance.

Township staff recommended the Optimists apply for Mapleton’s community grants program to help pay for the sign. Morgan said the township will cover hydro costs and site preparation as “in-kind donations.”

Mapleton will retain ownership of the land, while the Optimists will own the sign. Both agree on the design and will have access to advertise community events on it.

The sign will be about 2.5 metres tall with a flower bed at its base, Morgan said.  The township will cover the cost of the flower bed.

“It’s a great project and I hope council supports it and we can move forward and tidy up that entire corner,” Morgan said.

Councillor Michael Martin called the agreement “another great example of a good partnership.” He added, “That Moorefield Optimists group just keeps pumping out projects and doing great things.”

Mayor Gregg Davidson said, “We’re very fortunate in Mapleton to have so many great groups – we see that over and over again every year.”

Council voted unanimously in favour of the partnership during a Jan. 27 meeting.
