Minto fertile ground for pumpkins

MINTO - Council members here grow great pumpkins.

Minto councillors took three of the top six spots in the 2021 Metz Community Giant Pumpkin Challenge.

The town entered the three largest pumpkins grown by Town of Minto council members in the governance category at the competition.

There were a total of six entries in this category and Minto’s two largest pumpkins took first and second place.

“That’s a fantastic result for our first attempt,” said town landscape coordinator Paul Judge.

Results for the governance category were:

- 1st - Minto deputy mayor Dave Turton (245lbs);

- 2nd - Minto councillor Geoff Gunson (225lbs);

- 3rd - Wellington North  councillor Steve McCabe (200lbs);

- 4th - Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong (170lbs);

5th - Minto councillor Mark MacKenzie’ (140lbs);

6th - Mapleton Township councillor Marlene Ottens’ (105lbs).

The overall largest entry was in the Juniors category, where the winner grew a 370lb pumpkin.
