Mileage rate mimics Revenue Canada

Mileage rates in this town are going to be middle of the road – so to speak.

Following a brief discussion last week, councillors here have approved a resolution to base its mileage payments on rates used by the Canada Revenue Agency.

It is currently 42 cents per kilometre, and that is at the low end of area municipalities that staff surveyed.

Treasurer Gord Duff suggested to council that the revenue agency has two sets of mileages – 52 cents/km for the first 5,000 kilometres, and 46 cents/km for mileage above that. Splitting the difference would result in 49 cents/km.

The big difference, Duff said, is that would tie the mileage to the median rate of Revenue Canada.

Deputy-Mayor Judy Dirksen asked if that would mean that each time Revenue Canada changed its rates, would Minto’s change as well.

Duff said it would.
