GUELPH – The McMaster Department of Family Medicine and the Guelph Family Health Team (Guelph FHT) have announced a new partnership marking a significant step forward in expanding medical education opportunities and strengthening community-based primary care in our region.
Beginning in July 2026, Guelph and the surrounding area will welcome a new cohort of family medicine residents.
These learners will have the opportunity to train in a dynamic and supportive environment, gaining valuable experience in comprehensive, patient-centered care under the guidance of experienced clinicians.
This initiative will be led locally by Guelph FHT family physicians, who will serve as academic site coordinators.
“Their leadership and commitment to both medical education and high-quality primary care will be instrumental in shaping the success of this new training site,” officials state in a press release.
Beyond advancing medical education, this partnership represents a meaningful investment in the longterm sustainability of primary care in our region.
“By embedding medical learners directly within community settings, we create a strong pipeline for physician recruitment, encouraging new graduates to establish their practices locally and fostering lasting connections between patients and primary care providers,” the release states.
The integration of learners into collaborative practice environments also enhances team-based care, supports innovation, and promotes the adoption of progressive care models that respond to the evolving needs of patients.
Faculty and learners alike will benefit from a culture of continuous learning, inter-professional collaboration, and shared best practices, strengthening both care quality and provider satisfaction.
“We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will have on learners, patients, and the broader Guelph community,” officials say.
“Together, we are investing in the future of family medicine and enhancing healthcare for generations to come.”
