March 25 blood donor clinic in Fergus cancelled

FERGUS – The blood donor clinic slated for March 25 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex has been cancelled and future clinics will be held at a different site.

Emma Willms, event coordinator for Canadian Blood Services (CBS), said the future site is yet to be determined, but those details will be finalized before the next scheduled clinic on April 29.

It will be in or near Fergus, she said, and will likely hold the same hours: 2:30 to 7:30pm.

“We’re moving out of the sportsplex while the vaccination clinic is there,” she said. “That’s a pretty important event too.”

CBS normally holds a donation event in Fergus on the last Thursday of the month.

Clinics will be held at the new location until October, when the mass vaccination effort is expected to end and the Fergus sportsplex will be available again.

CBS used to encourage walk-ins, but because of COVID-19, “now it’s by appointment only,” Willms said.

“All the people who had booked appointments (for the March clinic) have been notified and offered an appointment for April.”

In fact, the April clinic is completely booked and the agency is booking appointments for May 27.

Strict COVID-19 safety protocols are in place at the clinics and Willms said people who have received the COVID-19 vaccine are still able to donate blood.

“There is no deferral time if they’ve received the vaccine,” she said.
