MAPLETON – Township officials are working to diversify Mapleton’s investments to reduce risk and optimize returns, with guidance from Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) advisors.

The fees for the advisors are included in the purchase price of the township’s investment, and are reflected within the quoted yields, so “there is no cost directly to the township, and zero fees billed to the township,” Mapleton treasurer Patrick Kelly told the Community News

In 2025, the township collected $545,507 in investment returns.

According to a township report presented to council on March 10, treasurer Patrick Kelly evaluated potential investment advisors based on:

– experience working with municipalities and public sector entities;

– knowledge of municipal investment regulations;

– investment strategy and advisory capabilities;

– reporting and portfolio monitoring tools; and

– fee structure and overall value.

Based on the above criteria, Kelly hired RBC Dominion Services to provide investment strategy advice, including portfolio monitoring and performance reporting, market outlook and investment recommendations, compliance guidance with municipal investment regulations and ongoing consultation with Mapleton’s finance department. RBC will not have authority to make investment decisions on the township’s behalf – all investment decisions will remain the township’s responsibility and will be made by authorized staff.

Recommendations from RBC advisors will be considered as part of the township’s broader review process.

“The township may continue to obtain investment products, services or advice from other financial institutions, brokers or advisors, where it is deemed appropriate and in the best interest of the township,” the report states.

“This structure ensures the township retains full control, oversight and  flexibility in the management of its investment portfolio.
