Mapleton bridge project to begin Feb. 23
Bridge work to be completed end of October
GUELPH – An update on two Mapleton bridge rehabilitations worth $2.6 million was presented at a recent county council meeting.
The Flax and Simmons bridges, both located on Wellington Road 11 in Mapleton, are slated to begin construction very soon.
KB Civil Constructors Inc., of North York, will be handling the ground work, which includes:
- structural steel repairs;
- bearing replacements;
- steel recoating; and
- miscellaneous concrete repairs.
According to a Jan. 13 county roads committee report, to facilitate the work safely and efficiently full road closures are required at each bridge and will be scheduled at different times.
The Flax Bridge rehabilitation is set for Feb. 23 and is located near Wellington Road 109.
The Simmons Bridge construction, proposed for May 25, will not begin until Flax Bridge is reopened to traffic.
Project completion is anticipated for the end of October, states the report.
The closure of Wellington Road 11 for the Simmons Bridge will have a direct impact on local businesses and residents, committee chair Gregg Davidson told council.
He added the roads division will be working closely with the county’s economic development team to support outreach efforts and coordinate meetings with the businesses to reduce the road closure’s impact.
County council received the report for information.
