Many without working smoke alarms

Fire Chief Rick Richardson has expressed concern with  the ongoing “Home Safe Homes” fire safety inspections being conducted by the Mapleton Fire Department.

The Home Safe Home inspection is an initiative from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office to ensure every home within the province has working smoke alarms on every level of the home to comply with the Ontario Fire Code enacted in 2005.

Richardson says in recent weeks 20% of the homes inspected either had no smoke alarms or an insufficient number of alarms. He would like to remind Mapleton residents the law requires a working smoke alarm on each level of the home, including the basement.

Non-compliance with this law can result in a $235 fine under the Ontario Provincial Offenses Act, but Richardson says the ultimate goal is not prosecution but rather compliance.
