Local family health teams secure funding
TORONTO – Local health care teams are among those across the province receiving funding as part of the provincial government’s drive to connect all Ontarians to primary care by 2029.
The province announced on Aug. 18 that $250 million was being divvied out to 124 health teams, with the aim of growing teams and connecting 500,000 people to a family doctor or primary care team.
Primary care teams connect people to health professionals working together under one roof, including doctors, nurse practitioners, registered and practical nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and dieticians, and others.
Local groups – including Upper Grand, East Wellington, Mount Forest and Minto-Mapleton family health teams, as well as those in Guelph – are expected to connect 12,233 patients in the next year with funding.
The province is planning another round of funding to support 78 primary care teams and connect an additional 600,000 people, with applications opening in September.
The province said it plans to add at least 300 new primary care teams and connect more than two million people to care through its Primary Care Action Plan by 2029.
