Local couple wins national volunteer award

Drayton’s Alice and George Van Ankum were named National Volunteers of the Year by the Canadian Diabetes Association on Oct. 22 in Montreal.

“Their achievements and their leadership in the diabetes community in Canada have made a significant impact and are an inspiration to us all,” National Awards Chair Arlene Kuntz said of the couple.

Alice Van Ankum said she was honoured to receive the national award.

“It has been a wonderful experience to work with our local association and our Kitchener and Hamilton offices, and I am very proud of the difference it makes in the lives of Canadians with diabetes,” she said.

“My husband George has had diabetes for 47 years and has been very loving and supportive with my volunteering for 33 years. A great big thank you to the association for this special event.”

George Van Ankum also thanked the association and said when he was diagnosed 47 years ago, he did not know anything about diabetes.

“By paying close attention to information from the association, and a loving wife who keeps me healthy, I stand before you tonight on my own two feet,” George said.

Alice and George Van Ankum have served the North Perth – North Wellington Branch located in Harriston since its earliest beginnings back in 1976.

Alice has served on several committees and currently is the membership convener, canvass co-convener, program co-ordinator and looks after the office every Tuesday and Friday.

George is the chairman of the branch and, according to many, is one of the best canvassers in the area.

The Van Ankums are the representatives for Drayton, host the annual general meeting in Drayton and are both involved with looking after literature tables at health fairs and community events. Their interest in sharing the message regarding the seriousness of diabetes is impressive.

Ellen Malcolmson, President and chief executive officer, welcomed and congratulated award recipients. Other awards were presented to:
