Local brothers take on HYROX World Championships in Stockholm, represent Canada
ELORA – Local Elora athlete Brock McKenzie recently represented Canada on the world stage at the HYROX World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, competing in the highly competitive Men’s Pro Doubles division alongside his brother Peyton McKenzie.
What made the accomplishment even more impressive was that the partnership came together on just two weeks’ notice.
After a last-minute change in race plans, Brock’s brother stepped in as a substitute partner, despite never having competed in a HYROX event before.
HYROX is a global fitness racing competition that combines eight one-kilometre runs with eight functional fitness stations, including sled pushes, sled pulls, rowing, skiing, burpee broad jumps, lunges, farmer’s carries and wall balls.
The Pro Doubles division features heavier weights and requires athletes to strategically divide the workload while maintaining a fast pace throughout the race.
Despite having no previous race experience together and limited time to prepare as a team, the brothers relied on their athletic backgrounds, determination and teamwork to deliver a strong performance on the world championship stage.
They completed the demanding race in an impressive time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 27 seconds, finishing 458th in the large pool of competitors.
“To be able to compete at the World Championships representing Canada alongside my brother was a special experience,” said Peyton.
“With only two weeks to prepare together, our goal was simply to make the most of the opportunity and enjoy the experience. We’re proud of the result and grateful for the chance to compete against some of the best athletes in the world.”
The event brought together elite athletes from around the globe, making Stockholm the centre of the HYROX community for the championship weekend.
For the McKenzie brothers, the race was not only a test of fitness and endurance but also a memorable opportunity to compete together on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
