Large storage shed destroyed by fire Sunday night
About 50 firefighters responded to blaze between Howick, Palmerston
MINTO – A large storage shed full of straw was destroyed by fire at a rural property between Howick and Palmerston on Sunday night.
Volunteer firefighters responded to the blaze, near the intersection of Bride Road and 3rd Line in Minto, shortly after 9pm on July 26, said Callise Loos, deputy director of fire services for Minto, Mapleton and Wellington North.
Around 50 to 60 firefighters total were at the scene, Loos told the Community News on Monday.
Mutual aid crews from the North Perth, Listowel and Howick departments were called in overnight to assist firefighters from Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford.
Tankers also responded from the Arthur (Wellington North) and Moorefield (Mapleton) fire stations.
The cause of the fire was unknown as of Monday, and with the shed collapsed, fire officials don’t know if they’ll be able to make a determination. However, the department may learn more in the coming days, said Loos, who pegged damage from the blaze at roughly $600,000.
On Monday afternoon, firefighters were moving straw and watering hot spots. Loos said crews were expected to remain on scene for several hours.
