Born in Toronto April 5, 1938, passed away quietly on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by family. She will be sadly missed by her three children; Sandra Cosgrove from Toronto, Bradley Hurd & wife Teriann from Moore Lake and Cathy Stiehl & husband John from Guelph. Her five Grandchildren; Stewart Hurd & wife Dawn from Haliburton, Stephen Cosgrove from Toronto, Melissa Hurd & partner Justin Heyworth from Uxbridge, Janelle Stiehl & husband Mark Godin from Guelph & Mathew Stiehl also from Guelph. And her five Great Grandchildren Jordyn & Jaxon Hurd from Haliburton and Colby, Kate & Bodie Heyworth from Uxbridge. Shirley worked most of her adult life for the Federal Government as an Executive Assistant to the Director of Indian Affairs. She lived in Rockwood where she called home for 30 years, prior to moving to Riverside Glen in April of 2023. She was an incredibly hard worker and continued that hard work into retirement, as she cared for her home and created the most beautiful gardens that she was very proud of. Shirley also enjoyed travelling, sewing, square dancing and she volunteered with the University of Guelph, looking after the plants and flowers for 15 years. Shirley will be remembered fondly for her incredible work ethic, the quiet way which she lived her life and the special connections she made along the way. Friends will be received at the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 1:00pm – 2:00pm. Funeral service will begin at 2:00pm in the funeral home chapel. Reception to follow in the Wall-Custance Family Reception Centre. Arrangements entrusted to the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Shirley M. Hurd in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
