HARRISTON – The Harriston and District Horticultural Society enjoyed a great evening on April 20 as members were able to meet in person at the Senior’s Centre/Train Station here following a lengthy pandemic hiatus.

The society welcomed a number of guests including Roberta of Roberta’s Tomato Seeds and More of Palmerston.  She sells seeds in small packages as well as plants and can be found on Facebook.

The society’s participation in the Think Minto First fundraising program was another great success and the group thanks all those who purchased gift certificates.

This program which is run by the Minto Chamber of Commerce and supports both local businesses and local charitable organizations. This was the group’s 10th year of participating in the program and over this period they have sold over $88,000 worth of certificates and have raised over $8,100 for the society.

Guest speaker was Shirley Koch of Riverbend Garden and Nursery.  She and her husband, Allan, were able to bring along a number of plants including succulents, hellebores, hostas and primroses.

“It was a very enjoyable presentation about hostas and peonies, and many were able to purchase some gorgeous plants,” society officials state.

After not being able to hold the regular Garden Festival the past two years due to COVID-19, the society has set a date of June 4 for the 2022 festival. The event will be held at the Harriston Community Centre grounds and the local firefighter’s breakfast is also scheduled for the same location that day.

“Watch for info as the date approaches - hope to see you there,” officials urge.
