It is with saddened hearts that the family of Marlene Lillian Gutpell (nee Watson) announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday January 28, 2026 at Rainy River Hospital. She was in her 73rd year. Left to cherish her memory is her husband Thomas, their two children Brittany and Matthew (Kristie), and her beloved grandson Adler. Also surviving are her siblings Donna (Howard) Wheeler, Jim (Anne Marie) Watson, Barbara Kesselring, and David (Penny) Watson. She was survived also by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Donald (Dave) and Ruth Watson, as well as her brother Glenn (and his wife Marilyn) Watson. Marlene was born and raised on a dairy farm outside of Guelph. After marrying Thomas, together they moved to Ponsonby where they raised their family. Upon retirement they relocated to Rainy River in order to be closer to their children. Marlene was an avid reader and loved watching classic movies, British television shows, as well as major curling and soccer events. As a lover of nature and the great outdoors,Marlene enjoyed gardening, going for long drives in the country, as well as doing a little shopping along the way. Anyone who knew Marlene knew her love of animals, especially her cats. Over the years, along with Thomas, Marlene took in a number of strays, becoming a Cat Mom to many. Most of all Marlene loved visiting with her children and spending time with her grandson. A private service will be held at a later date at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River where she will be laid to rest. As per Marlene’s wishes, donations may be made to Best for Kitty located in Fort Frances, or the Rainy River Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Northridge Funeral Home Ltd. Emo, ON.
