Volunteers with NeighbourWood will be out in force at the end of this week, putting more trees into the ground.

Spokesman Toni Ellis said  the group will be working with high school students this Friday, and on Saturday volunteers will be out in large numbers planting, re-planting,  mulching, and watering.

Neighbourwood was formed to celebrate trees in the community, and highlight their importance to the environment.

Ellis said trees hold a tremendous carbon value, cleaning the air and exuding oxygen.

She said volunteers will plant larger trees on streets and use smaller trees from the county Green Legacy program near a retention pond.

Ellis is aware Centre Wellington lost a huge number of trees on one of its most beautiful streetscapes, between Elora and Fergus this year.

Dozens of trees used to shade the Colborne Street extension, but many were taken down this winter because they were dead or dying. There are a few new trees planted, but Ellis said her group is hoping to eventually replace them all.

She enjoyed the shaded road that the trees created, and said the township should have lots of streets with that kind of tree cover.

NeighbourWood is now using an environmentally friendly project to raise funds for tree plantings in the community.

A company outside of Elmira has developed a  nearly indestructible bag that is very portable. It can be used to lug items around, but one of its key features is that it has a small pocket. That means the user can carry goods in it, but when it is no longer needed for that, it can be rolled up into a compact ball, using the pocket.

That ball is small enough to fit into a purse or even a jacket pocket, so it is very convenient “so you’re never caught without a bag.”

Ellis noted that not only is the product made locally, so it travels very little to reach this area, but the rip-stop nylon is practically indestructible.

Ellis said they were designed by Joyce Roth, and they sell for $12 each, or two for $20. She noted that is a high price, but added, “They will last forever; the money goes to a good cause.”

Anyone wanting to place an order can called 519-846-0841.

Neighbourwood members will deliver orders in Fergus and Elora.
