Great timing for comedy

Dear Editor,

Throughout high school, I’ve read a number of Shakespeare plays, all tragedies. Each one invoked emotion; dread, disbelief, sorrow.

I don’t have a problem with these feelings, as I’ve always thought that the best plays are the ones that can bring out a strong emotional response. However, in a time when our reality is full of sadness and fear, sometimes, all we really want is to have a laugh.

That is why I was overjoyed when I saw that the Grey Wellington Theatre Guild (GWTG) is putting on a play in November. Not just any play, but a comedy.

The comedy is called Five Alarm, a spicy play featuring a woman who enters into a highly competitive chilli-cook off.

This, I think, was a genius decision by those in charge of choosing the play.

In these uncertain times, with the controversy surrounding COVID-19 vaccinations and the tensions in the Indigenous community, it is easy for people to feel depressed and bogged down by life.

By putting on a comedy the GWTG will be giving Canadians a chance to forget the troubles of their daily lives and to just enjoy themselves.

Because sometimes, laughter is the best medicine of all.
