Garbage cleanup to take place in Erin Oct. 18

ERIN – The community here is set to come together this Saturday to help clean up garbage throughout town before snow falls.

The Erin environment and sustainability advisory committee (ESAC) is hosting a community garbage cleanup in Erin from 9am until noon on Oct. 18.

Volunteers will meet at the Erin Agricultural Society parking lot at 184 Main St. before getting started.

There will be a noontime appreciation lunch for volunteers.

Committee member Jen Edwards said a garbage cleanup event is held every year in the spring, but ESAC decided it would be valuable to add a second date in fall moving forward.

The timing is intentionally a week after the fall fair, she noted, as “people park all over town and tend to drop garbage everywhere.

“As much as we appreciate everybody coming they tend to not always take their garbage with them,” she said.

The agricultural society is lending its dumpsters for garbage disposal, something Edwards said is highly appreciated.

If enough volunteers show up, she said the cleanup will go beyond the areas impacted by the fair and include the trail along the river.

ESAC will have gloves, bags, trash pickers and high-visibility vests available for volunteers, Edwards said.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and Edwards noted “kids love the pickers.”

The garbage cleanup is a demonstration of how much Erin residents value their town, she said.

“We are proud to be here – we are proud of our town.”

She said there is great camaraderie during the community cleanups, and it’s a good way for families to spend time together.

It’s also an opportunity for high school students to get the volunteer hours they need to graduate, Edwards noted.
