Fergus women’s hockey league looking for players

FERGUS  – The Fergus Senior Women’s Hockey League is searching for players for its third season.

“We had a great first year. We only had four teams that year but last year we went up to six teams which was awesome,” said league convenor Britt MacDonald.

“However, we are struggling this year because our [ice] times have moved to a bit later.”

MacDonald says due to the lack of ice time available in the county, the league has had to push its times back to 10 and 10:30pm.

That has added extra pressure to the league, as some players are unable to commit to playing that late.

“Lots of leagues are feeling the pressure,” said MacDonald.

“Now we are down to four teams.”

The league is open to hockey players of all levels, even those who have never played hockey before.

“Anyone from beginner to advanced can play, even if you’ve never played hockey before you are welcome to come out,” MacDonald told the Advertiser. “It’s super-fun and welcoming.”

Players who sign up will be assigned to a team and will play one game per week; either Sundays at 10:30pm or Tuesdays at 10pm. All games will be played at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus. This league does not have practice sessions or coaches.

MacDonald said due to the cancellation of the U22 team this year, the senior league will be accepting players 18 plus.
