Fergus Fall Fair seeking ambassador for 2026-27 season

FERGUS – Stepping outside your comfort zone can be intimidating, but Sarah Shaw says it was one of the best decisions she’s made. 

As her year representing the Fergus Agricultural Society comes to a close, she’s encouraging other young adults to take that same leap by entering the 2026 Fergus Fall Fair Ambassador competition.

“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect going into the program, but it’s given me opportunities I never would have had otherwise,” Shaw said.

“I’ve met incredible people, learned so much about agriculture and our community, and really grown in my confidence.”

The Fergus Fall Fair Ambassador program is open to young adults aged 17 to 25 who reside in Centre Wellington or surrounding areas and focuses on leadership, communication and community involvement. 

Throughout the competition, participants are asked to propose a new event or educational activity for future Fergus Fall Fairs, complete an interview, deliver a prepared speech, answer an impromptu question and create a display about themselves before one contestant is selected to represent the Fergus Agricultural Society for the coming year.

Jade Ritter, a former ambassador who now chairs the ambassador program, said many people assume the competition is only for those with a farming background or connection to the Fergus Fall Fair.

“That’s one of the biggest misconceptions,” Ritter said. “You don’t have to grow up on a farm or have an agricultural background to be an ambassador. 

“We are seeking individuals who have a passion for their community, are open to learning more about agriculture and are willing to challenge themselves and develop new skills.” 

Ritter said participants often leave the program with stronger public speaking and interview skills, lifelong friendships and a greater appreciation for local agriculture.

“The competition is really the beginning of a leadership journey,” she said. 

“Whether or not someone is selected as Ambassador, every contestant develops their confidence and communication abilities, which they can carry with them throughout their education, careers and personal endeavours.”

As ambassador, Shaw has represented the Fergus Agricultural Society at community events throughout the year.

“It’s been such a rewarding experience,” she said. 

“If you’re even a little curious about the program, I’d encourage you to give it a try. You might surprise yourself.”

This year’s Fergus Fall Fair Ambassador competition will take place on Sept.  13 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. 

The successful candidate will receive a $1,000 scholarship and spend the next year representing the Fergus Agricultural Society at community events before advancing to the Canadian National Exhibition Ambassador of the Fairs competition.
