Erin to regulate short-term rentals
The town has rejected licensing for STRs, instead opting to regulate them through the official plan and zoning
ERIN – The Town of Erin has elected to take a non licensing approach to short-term property rentals (STR).
Instead it will regulate STRs through its official plan and comprehensive zoning bylaws.
“This would allow the town to clearly define short-term rentals, identify where they are permitted and establish zoning regulations such as parking, bedroom limits and principal residence requirements,” said town bylaw officer Martyna Sliwiak.
“Any issues related to noise, parking or property standards will continue to be addressed using existing town bylaws.”
Sliwiak told council the process would take approximately nine months for STR owners to ensure compliance.
“Unauthorized or non compliant STRs will be addressed through zoning enforcement,” said Sliwiak.
Those who refuse to comply or regularly violate the bylaw could be brought to court.
The town has decided against a licensing program as the workload and cost is beyond its capabilities at this time, officials say.
The report was received for information with full support from council. 'Draft bylaws and zoning will be presented to council at a later date.
Councillor Cathy Aylard was absent from the meeting.
