Erin Fall Fair announces winners of giant vegetable contest

ERIN –  In the spring, as one fair after another made the tough decision to announce cancellations, gardeners decided to give their green thumbs a new experience.

The weather cooperated and  Conrad  Wheildon,  from Erin Fair’s Giant Pumpkin and Vegetable Committee, decided to run a virtual contest. New business owner Rick Sova, from Cornerstone  Properties and  Bloom Green in Erin, hosted the competition.

Competitors  brought their  biggest sunflower head,  heaviest tomato and ugliest anything to the Garden Centre on Wellington Road 124 in Erin for the competition.

The winners include:

Heaviest Tomato

Giant tomato – This is the 2.83-lb tomato grown by Barret Mucci that won the Heaviest Tomato category.

– 1st Barret Mucci: 2.83lbs;

– 2nd Betty Van Wyck: 2.11lbs; and

– 3rd Travis Farrel: 2.10lbs.

 

Largest Sunflower Head

Caroline Marshall’s sunflower head measured 21 inches and won the Largest Sunflower Head category.

– 1st Caroline Marshall: 21 inches;

– 2nd Brian Cleave: 19.1 inches; and

– 3rd Oliver Fisher: 18.5 inches.

Ugliest  Anything

– 1st Joanne Borksok:  13.77lb  Kohlrabi;

– 2nd Brandon and Ethan Reid – Sunflower; and

– 3rd Robert Craft – Corona Potato

Prize money will be  handed out at noon on Oct. 10 at  Bloom Green.
