Durham donation considered

Councillor Dan Yake is asking Wellington North council to consider making a financial donation to rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the Durham tornado.

Durham, just north of Mount Forest, was hit by a tornado in late August. It cut a diagonal swath from the south end of town, and through the industrial park.

“I know we made an offer of help [staff and equipment], but I’d like to get your thoughts on making a donation to the relief fund.”

Mayor Mike Broomhead said Wellington North has sent considerable help, primarily trucks.

Even so, Yake believes the municipality should consider a donation. “I don’t know what other municipalities are doing, not that that really matters. We should think about it.”

Broomhead asked if Yake was looking for a report from Clerk Lori Heinbuch.

Yake said the municipality should simply find out how to go about it.

Broomhead said the township made a similar donation to the Fergus tornado relief fund.

“We were compensated by the province for the time of our employees going there; we gave that back to the relief fund in Fergus.”

“But we haven’t done anything ... other than send a few trucks up there,” Yake asked.

Staff will look into the issue further.
