MINTO – Between Sept. 19 and Oct. 12 the Minto area will be participating in the national celebration of arts and culture known as Culture Days.
At the end of each September, thousands of free events pop up around the country, both in-person and online.
The focus is to support a Canada-wide network of arts, culture and heritage organizers to facilitate free public events.
“We’re excited to participate in Culture Days again to celebrate lots of existing cultural assets we have in Minto as well as host some new exciting events which are hosted by different businesses, community organizations and also the Minto Cultural Roundtable,” town marketing and community development coordinator Erin Raftis told the Advertiser.
The town has already held some big events such as “Apples and Astronomy,” which takes place on deputy mayor Jean Anderson’s farm and is open for all to enjoy apple treats, live music and explore the night sky.
“An exciting event we have coming up is the Minto Dance Academy is hosting a movement workshop for all ages on Oct. 4 from 1:30 to 3:30pm,” Raftis said. “It’s a good way to get active and check out a new space in Harriston.”
She said all events are free but “if people are able we ask they bring in a donation to our community pantries to help support and get those stocked up for the winter season.”
On Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, the Harriston Historical Society is hosting a Minto Back in Time event at the Harriston Library.
Those attending can step into the past with an exhibit and explore moments that helped shape the community.
“The libraries are hosting lots of fun activities, including a ‘Craft and Create: Book Pumpkins’ event on Oct. 8,” Raftis said.
Those looking for a quiet Sunday can venture to Brass Ridge Acres for a “U-Pick Flowers” event on Sept. 28 from 10am to 12pm.
This is a self-guided activity where guest can pick from rows of vibrant dahlias and cut favourites to take home.
“We’ve been doing Culture Days for many years now so we’re just excited to add on and keep making it bigger,” said Raftis.
“I think it’s an important way to stay connected to the community and for new people who maybe don’t know about all the lovely things we have going on.”
Other events include:
- Try-It Tai Chi class for seniors, Sept. 26;
- Carnegie Café: Life on the Farm, Oct. 3;
- Tri-County Ag Machines and Memories Tour, Oct. 5; and
- Minto Heritage Walks, self-guided.
“[Culture Days] is a great way to get your hands in and try new things in Minto,” Raftis said.
