Couple loses $140,000 in investment scam
GUELPH – On Jan. 20, Guelph Police received a report that a Guelph couple had been defrauded of $140,000 in an investment scam.
“It was advised that the couple was seeking new investments online when they came across a website they believed to be associated with a legitimate financial institution,” Guelph Police stated in a Jan. 21 press release.
“After speaking with two individuals who claimed to be representatives of the institute, the couple invested in what they thought were high-yielding GICs.”
Police added, “When the couple attempted to withdraw their investments from the accounts, they were informed that there was no record of their account and that the individuals they had spoken to were not who they claimed to be.”
Police are reminding everyone to be cautious when seeking online financial services and assistance.
