County to take usual two months off for the summer - maybe
County council has traditionally suspended its operations for July and August - and it might again this year.
Clerk Donna Bruce said in a report May 27 council should pass a resolution if it wants to maintain the tradition of no meetings during the summer.
Warden Joanne Ross-Zuj said she would “try to abide by that.” She has the power to call a meeting at any time.
But councillor Linda White said this is an election year, and with the deadline for nominations and the campaign starting in earnest on Sept. 10, this might not be a good time to take two full months off.
She said if council scheduled a summer meeting, they could at least schedule vacations to be able to attend.
Councillor Gore Tosh asked if it would be just a council meeting, or if committee meetings would also be held.
White said she was suggesting it would just be a council meeting. She added that the second week of August seems opportune, because the Association of Municipalities of Ontario will be meeting Aug. 15 to 18 this year.
Ross-Zuj said if there are enough agenda items to warrant a meeting, she would call one.
Councillor Rod Finnier suggested councillors reserve Aug. 12, a Thursday, for a meeting if one is necessary.
Ross-Zuj said that sounded reasonable and council voted to accept that date if it is needed.
