WELLINGTON COUNTY – At the Nov. 27, county council meeting, council approved a recommendation that will increase the tipping fee at waste facilities from $145 per tonne to $160 per tonne, effective Jan. 1.
“To keep pace with the trend of increasing tipping fees across the industry, staff recommended increasing the County’s waste tipping fee,” said Das Soligo, county manager of solid waste services. “Not keeping pace with the trend of increasing fees runs the risk of steeper future increases in order to catch up at a later date.”
A waste tipping fee is a tonnage-based fee that is charged to users of waste facilities dropping off loads of garbage.
The fee is typically determined by weighing a vehicle before and after the load of waste has been disposed of.
In the Guelph–Wellington area there is waste disposal competition, with both municipal and private waste transfer stations operating in both the county and Guelph.
This means that adjusting the tipping fee can have impact on the amount of revenue, and the amount of waste the county receives through the operation of its waste facility infrastructure.
Keeping pace with the industry trend of rising fees is important, as the county aims to preserve landfill capacity to continue to meet the needs of its residents and businesses.
