County recognized with economic development award
WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County has been recognized for its work on farm succession with an award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).
The non-profit selected the county for its gold level excellence award in the innovative economic development category for the county’s Your Farm, Your Future succession planning guidebook.
“Farms are the backbone of Wellington County, and the decisions made in the next few years will shape our agricultural landscape for generations,” county councillor and economic development committee chair Jeff Duncan stated in a news release.
According to the 2021 Agriculture Census, just 276 of the county’s 2,600 farm operations had written succession plans.
“A clear transition plan protects farmers’ legacy and strengthens the future of agriculture. I am proud the IEDC has recognized the county’s innovative work to support farmers in succession planning,” Duncan added.
IEDC president and CEO Nathan Ohle stated the county is “leading the field of excellence in economic development.”
