WELLINGTON COUNTY – In celebration of Local Food Week this June, the county is releasing its new Taste Real Local Food Map, a comprehensive guide designed to help residents and visitors discover and support the diverse range of farms, food producers, markets, and local food businesses across the region.
“The Local Food Map is part of the county’s ongoing commitment to promoting agriculture and strengthening the local food economy,” officials stated.
The map, originally published in 2005, highlights where to find fresh, local products including seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, preserves and honey.
Users can explore listings by product category or geographic area, “making it easier than ever to connect directly with local producers,” officials stated.
“Launching the Local Food Map during Local Food Week is a perfect fit,” stated councillor Jeff Duncan, chair of the county’s economic development committee.
“This week is about celebrating the bounty grown right here in Ontario, and now our community has even better ways to find and support the incredible local producers that make Wellington County so unique.”
This year’s map includes new points of interest, links to additional Taste Real publications, and an updated “Must Taste” list, featuring a signature product from each member municipality.
“Whether you’re planning a weekend road trip or looking for nearby farm-fresh eggs, the map is your go-to resource for eating local and supporting our vibrant food community.” stated county economic development coordinator Heather Vasey.
Local food plays a vital role in Ontario’s agri-food sector, which is rooted in a proud tradition of farming and food production.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 60 per cent of the food grown in the province is enjoyed right here in Ontario.
Supporting local food drives job creation, fuels economic growth, and strengthens the communities and businesses that power Ontario’s economy.
The County of Wellington encourages everyone to explore the new Local Food Map.
Copies of can be picked up at Wellington County and Guelph libraries, tourism outlets, and participating locations.
