County approves request to allow trail to pass through closed Erin landfill site

ERIN – The County of Wellington has approved a request to allow Erin’s Riverwalk Trail to pass through the county’s closed Erin landfill site.

Wellington County council approved the request from the Town of Erin at its Sept. 24 meeting.

In 2018 the town opened Phase 1 of its Riverwalk Trail to the public. Since then, town officials have reached out to Solid Waste Services staff about the possibility of allowing Phase 2 of the Riverwalk Trail to pass through the County of Wellington’s closed landfill property in Erin, explained solid waste services manager Das Soligo in a staff report.

“Allowing the trail to pass inside the boundary of the county’s property at this location is not expected to result in negative environmental or access impacts, so long as the perimeter fencing is relocated to still restrict access to the remainder of the property,” the report notes.

Though town officials requested the fence be relocated at the county’s cost, in conjunction with other fencing work on the site, the county approved Soligo’s recommendation to work with the town on access agreements, any necessary approvals and relocation of the perimeter fencing, at the Town of Erin’s cost.
