BRUCEDALE – Guelph/Eramosa councillors shared varying opinions on Monday about conceptual drawings for proposed gateway signs in Rockwood.
As part of the township’s broader economic development and branding strategy, $50,000 was allocated in the 2025 budget for the installation of gateway signs at key entry points into the village.
According to township staff, the signs will serve three purposes: enhancing the visual identity of Rockwood, welcoming residents and visitors, and supporting tourism and local business visibility.
“This is a capital project item that was approved in the 2025 budget and staff have been working with the design firm to come up with three concepts based on direction and feedback received from the committee of the whole,” clerk Amanda Knight said at the Oct. 20 council meeting.
Mayor Chris White said township officials have “talked about this before,” adding, “I think we all realize the value of this coming into the community.
“People have asked for this for years.”

“This is fantastic,” said councillor Mark Bouwmeester. “I like how you sort of have the rock and the wood theme incorporated.”
Bouwmeester asked staff to send updated renderings and detailed financial information back to the committee of the whole.
“I would wonder if we just do another month for further discussion to refine everything,” said Bouwmeester.
Councillor Corey Woods raised the issue of cost.
“We already allocated $50,000 towards this project in 2025, however, if you’re talking four signs at $40,000, there’s $160,000,” said Woods.
“Is there going to be overage? … If this comes in as a million-dollar project, it’s not going to get done in 2026.”
While the project was slated for 2025, staff has made it clear it will not be completed by end of year and will pass over into 2026.
“I don’t know if it will be grandiose enough,” said councillor Steven Liebig.
“I don’t think the size is big enough. You take the sign, it’s a six foot sign, it really doesn’t say, you know, Rockwood.”
Staff will present updated renderings as well as more in-depth financial numbers at next month’s committee of the whole meeting.
