MAPLETON – Council here has approved the pre-budget expenditure for a new tandem axle dump truck with plow and wing attachments.

According to a report shared with council, the Mapleton public works fleet includes eight tandem trucks used for winter maintenance, gravel and asphalt hauling, and shoulder maintenance.

“Truck 15-009 is scheduled for replacement at its end of life in 2027 per the Asset Management Plan, with rising maintenance costs and reliability concerns,” states the report.

According to staff, current market conditions for heavy-duty trucks require significant lead times between order placement and the delivery of the vehicle. So to ensure the truck is received in 2027, the order must be placed this year.

“The supplier has confirmed an estimated lead time of 18 months,” the report states. “The quoted cost is slightly higher than the original budget estimate; however, the variance is within the township’s approved budget tolerance and does not exceed the threshold requiring additional council approval.”

The original budgeted cost was $421,092 and the current estimated cost of the truck is $425,000.

“The increase reflects current market conditions, including inflationary pressures and ongoing supply constraints within the heavy-duty vehicle industry,” states the report.

The truck is to be funded by the fleet infrastructure reserve fund.
