The heritage designation for lands at the old Fergus high school has been repealed.

Centre Wellington council passed a bylaw on Monday that eliminated the designation on the land east of the old high school, which allows the developer to grant clear title to prospective buyers.

Planner Brett Salmon said that when the high school lands at the corner of Tower Street and Belsyde Avenue were sold, council had placed a heritage designation on the old school property.

The developer severed the land behind the old school, but the property itself still had the heritage designation.

Councillor Fred Morris agreed with the request.

“There’s nothing left on the property to designate” he said of the lands behind the high school, where some additions had been located.

Those were torn down as part of the development. Only the original school remains, and the designation is still on that building.

The bylaw affects only the removal of the designation from the severed parcel.
