Concerns raised over door-to-door electrical sales

In correspondence at the June 1 meeting, councillors here received correspondence from the Township of Wellington North seeking a ban on door-to-door sales in the home services sector – such as the sale of electricity or home water heaters.

Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever said this was the first time a request had come before the township.

The Wellington North correspondence noted Ontario has implemented a ban on door-to-door sales for electricity and natural gas contracts by passing the Strengthening Consumer Protection and Electricity System Oversight Act, 2015.

However, Wellington North contended that over the past 12 months, Ontarians continued to experience unsolicited, aggressive and misleading sales tactics at their door from companies seeking to sell home energy products, despite this provincial legislation.

With door-to-door agents acting on behalf of these companies, misrepresenting their purpose and/or identity, often posing as utility inspectors and government agents needing to gain access to the homes of Ontarians, Wellington North is seeking the provinicial government to ban all door-to-door sales in the home services sector as soon as possible.
