Community rallies behind Erin family following devastating loss
ICU nurse Sarah De Sousa died suddenly on Sept. 24
ERIN – “She did everything she could for others.”
That’s how Dave Black described his wife, Sarah De Sousa, following her unexpected death last month.
De Sousa died in her sleep on Sept. 24 at the age of 47.
She worked as a registered nurse in the ICU at Brampton Civic Hospital and even embarked on a couple of mission trips to Haiti.
She has a 12-year-old daughter, Hayden, and 19-year-old stepdaughter, Kayla, who is studying to become a nurse just like De Sousa.
“She did what she could,” said Black. "She put everyone else in front of her.”
Black and De Sousa met in high school and reconnected later in life, settling in Erin with their family.
De Sousa’s sudden death was a complete shock to everyone who knew her.
Black said the family still doesn't know what exactly happened and now is dealing with financial pressures due to the loss.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by the family aims to help them cover mortgage payments, schooling costs and other expenses.
“I’m trying to pick up the slack here,” said Black.
The campaign has a $40,000 goal and as of Oct. 21 has raised around $3,500.
“This family has given so much to the fabric of Erin,” said family friend Lisa Teggart. “Now, the community is coming together to support them.”
