Car show, barbecue, displays highlight Heritage Days

Organizers are ready to welcome visitors to town for the second annual Harriston Heritage Days.

The inaugural Heritage Days in 2013, celebrating the 135th anniversary of the community in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of local Ford dealership Leslie Motors, was such as success, organizers decided to make it an annual event.

“With the success we had last year, everyone wanted to come back on board again,” said organizing committee chair John Mock, who noted the history-based nature of the event makes it unique among area festivals.

While the 2013 event featured a Ford car show, this year the town’s main street will be lined with vehicles of all makes and models (over 25 years old) from 10am to 3pm.

Anyone wishing to display their vehicle is encouraged to pre-register by contacting Leslie Motors at 1-800-997-2310.

The celebration, on June 14, will kick off with a breakfast at the Harriston Legion from 7 to 10:30am. The local Legion is celebrating a historical occasion of its own: the 75th anniversary of the branch.

The North Wellington Co-op will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary and will be hosting a barbecue from 11am to 1pm

Harriston Motors and NAPA Autopro will be presenting a Touch-A-Truck event, with proceeds to the Minto Fire Department, from 10am to 2pm at Harriston Motors.

Live performances by area musicians will take place downtown in Tannery Park with Matthew Grant appearing from 10 to 11:45am and Kayla McTaggart taking the stage between noon and 2:30pm.

The Harriston Kinsmen Club will be hosting a beef barbecue from 5 to 8pm at the Harriston Community Centre. Barbecue tickets are available at Harriston Home Hardware, Leslie Motors and Lakeridge Heating and Cooling.

The Harriston Historical Society will be presenting displays of clocks and family history, as well as offering a self-guided history tour and a Sports reunion of the 1964 OMHA  champion Pee Wees and 1968 OMHA Juveniles at the Legion.

The Harriston Library will be offering a hats and handbags exhibit and face painting for children. The Wellington County Library and Archives, which is celebrating it’s 115th anniversary, will be presenting an ancestry database demo on June 13 and 14.

Also scheduled for June 13 is an evening of improv comedy at the Harriston Town Hall Theatre. Presented by the Grey Wellington Theatre Guild, the event will begin at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome to watch and participate.
