Canon Robert Hulse is turning 90; church holding free concert to celebrate
ELORA – A special concert to celebrate Canon Robert Hulse’s 90th birthday will honour his life of education, music, faith and community, officials say.
It will take place on Nov. 15 at 4pm at Knox Presbyterians Church in Elora. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Deeply committed to fostering a vibrant community, Hulse has made outstanding contributions to the spiritual and cultural life of Elora and Drayton, officials say.
As a young rector, one of his dreams became a reality with the establishment of St. John’s Kilmarnock School in 1972. With money Hulse received from a car accident he bought the first building in which the school started.
Renowned throughout Wellington County for his inspirational leadership, dedication and love of music, he served at St. John’s Anglican Church for 40 years, officials say. There, he oversaw the establishment of one of Canada’s first professional church choirs.
Hulse continues to provide 10am Sunday services at the little white church on the corner of Main and Elm streets in Drayton.
Hulse received the Order of Canada in 2005 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts, education and charity in his community and church.
The concert will pay tribute to Hulse’s enduring contributions, officials state. Family, friends, colleagues and members of the wider community are invited to celebrate a life that has touched so many. There will be a brief reception following the concert in the basement of Knox Church.
