Box lacrosse season cancelled in Zone 8

CENTRE WELLINGTON – There will be no minor box lacrosse in this region this summer.

Officials of Zone 8 Lacrosse, which is made up of 10 minor associations, including the Arthur Aces and Centre Wellington Mohawks, announced on April 20 the 2020 regular  season has been cancelled.

The move impacts 90 teams, ranging from paperweight to intermediate, for boys and girls.

“Many of our clubs will not have access to any floor time until July at the earliest and we also have arenas that have been transformed into hospitals or testing centres,” stated Zone 8 director Steve Kelly in a letter posted on the organization’s website.

“From what we understand, they may not be available at all for summer use.”

Noting the organization wants what’s best for players, their families and local communities, Kelly said, “we are not comfortable having the kids back in the dressing rooms or on the floor.

“Nor do we want the parents, siblings and grandparents to possibly be exposed while watching the game.”

Kelly also stated, “At the end of the day Zone 8 cannot offer what parents and players have registered and paid for – and that is a normal … and a safe lacrosse season.”

Kelly said zone officials will continue to work with all clubs on alternative programming once it is safe to do so. He noted players and families can follow Zone 8 on Facebook and Twitter and visit www.zone81acrosse.ca for updates.
