BISMILLAH, Joan Camille (nee Salsoni)

The charismatic, multi-talented, and always beautifully stylish Joan Camille Bismillah (nee Salsoni) died quietly on August 5th, 2026 in Guelph, Ontario. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1928, immigrated to England in the 1950’s before settling permanently in Canada for over 60 years. Predeceased by her beloved husband “Bis”(2001), she is survived by her four children, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Knowledgeable and gifted in so many ways, she was an inspiration to many throughout her nine decades. An interior designer, midwife, activist, artist and culinary wizard, she was happiest entertaining and imparting her wealth of knowledge on any and every subject imaginable to family, friends and strangers. From navigating early childhood hardships, and a challenging young adulthood in the pre and nascent apartheid South Africa, to building new lives in two new continents, Joanie overcame every obstacle thrown at her, and then some. At age 91, she published her memoirs (A Chameleon From The Land Of The Quagga: An Immigrant’s Story) which remain a living testament to her rich and varied life. She is, and will be, greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. A private cremation ceremony will be held as per Joan’s request. Donations in her memory can be made to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Guelph, Ontario, in thanks to all the carers, and Veronica, during the last few years of her life.
