The Canadian Bible Society’s 2013 Bike for Bibles tour made a stop in Fergus on Aug. 13.
Eight bikers made the 120 kilometre trek from London on Aug. 12, part of a six-day tour which saw the travellers starting out from and returning to London the same day after travelling to destinations like Bayfield, Stratford and Port Stanley.
Because of the distance, the Fergus leg was the only overnight stop on the tour, with bikers enjoying a meal and spending the night at Melville United Church.
Fergus resident Hugh Mahoney joined the excursion, which included cyclists from London, Sarnia and Listowel.
“It’s a lot of fun and it’s for a good cause,” said Mahoney.
This year’s ride supports She’s My Sister, a coalition of faith-based organizations that use Bible-based healing to aid those suffering the trauma of the genocides in Rwanda.
Riders aim to raise at least $500 each for the cause, while enjoying the fellowship and fun of the tour.
The interdenominational nature of the event helps bring people of varying faith backgrounds together, said Burlington resident Klaas Slagter, a veteran of several Bikes for Bibles rides.
One tour, Slagter said, included participants from 17 different religious denominations.
“That’s the beauty of it – that we can all do this together,” Slagter said.
Donations to the cause can be made through bike4bibles.ca.
