ATKINSON, Rodney

Rodney Atkinson passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026, at the age of 93. Rodney was the first baby born at the original Groves Hospital, and 93 years later, it was there that he took his final breath. Like his parents before him, Rodney spent his life in Fergus, Ontario, a community that was home to him for more than nine decades. It was here that he lived, worked, raised his children, Lee Atkinson, Laurie Boyd and Iris Atkinson. He enjoyed visits from his great grandchildren, and met his sweetheart, Joan Schinck, with whom he shared many happy years and a loving connection with her family, who also became an important part of his life. Rodney loved music, playing the harmonica, and getting out on the dance floor every chance he could. He loved entertaining others and was always finding ways to bring a little more fun and laughter into the moment. More than anything, Rodney will be remembered for his exuberant love of life. A small informal service will be held at Belsyde Cemetery on October 3 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Groves Memorial Hospital, if desired.
