Approval for Norwell’s relay for life

Councillors here plan to put their best feet forward in memory of former councillor Larry Agla at this year’s Relay for Life in Palmerston.

This June, Norwell District Secondary School will once  again host its annual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Relay for Life is an overnight team event to raise funds for cancer research.

Betty Hoffele wrote, “It is a celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer.”

This year’s event starts on June 6 at 7pm and runs to 7am on June 7. Last year, the event raised $50,000.

Now in its fifth year, Hoffele said organizers have set a goal of $70,000 with a hope of 600 to 700 participants.

Hoffele wrote to council asking for support by granting a noise permit for the night of June 6. As well, council was encouraged to enter a team or purchase luminaries – candles that line the track in memory of loved ones.

Mayor David Anderson said it has always been a great event for the community.

Anderson added that Clerk Barb Wilson suggested council enter a team in memory of Agla, who died earlier this month. Anderson pointed out a team of 10 would require participation of council members and some staff.

Others interested in participating can contact Norwell District Secondary School at 519-343-3107 extension 426.
