Women’s Institutes are local, provincial, national, international organizations that promote women and families and communities. The goals are to empower women to make a difference. Feb. 18 marked the 118th anniversary of the organization.
The Homestead of the co-founder Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, at St. George, ON., marked her birthday on Feb. 27 with a new exhibit “The Empty Crib.” Tours there highlight the circumstances and events of her life which contributed to her becoming a trailblazer for us to admire.
A new Adelaide Hunter Hoodless award is being offered to recognize an outstanding Canadian Woman.
At the Erland Lee Museum Home in Stony Creek, the original home of the co-founders Janet and Erland Lee, there are opportunities to currently learn slipper knitting, rug braiding, pysanka, silk ribbon embroidery, pancakes and maple syrup events.
Several members are preparing to contribute their “Real Life Stories” to submit to the “Canada 150” project. Some were read at a recent meeting.
Two scholarships are being offered until March 31/15. Applications are available at Guidance offices.
The essay competition topic for the Dr. Ethel Chapman scholarship is “Are security cameras a necessity or a invasion of privacy?” The Wellington-Halton District WI Scholarship is for students entering a community college or trade school. It requires a synopsis of who you are, what are your aims and goals and where do you want to be in 10-15 years.
A Women’s Day session is offered on March 28 in New Dundee. Presentations will be offered on the autism spectrum disorder, “eating rainbow”, miniature fairy gardens.
To celebrate the 115” anniversary of Coningsby W.1. we are hosting a group of members and their husbands from the local club’s namesake link in Lincolnshire, England. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is stationed there in Coningsby. The presence of “our Lancaster” based out of Hamilton, created much patriotism as it flew in their air shows.
Several members will participate in the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada triennial convention in New Brunswick. The theme is “Planting Seeds of Change.” Competitions include an essay “Canada Through The Eyes of a New Canadian,” a historical photo story of an entrants home province and “A History of My Family Homestead,” a “Willy the Worm” craft collection container. Each registrant will contribute a piece of sea glass or stone to build a commemorative mosaic being created by the national president for Canada’s 150th birthday.
