Wellington North waives permit fees for storm-affected properties

Wellington North council has waived permit fees for building, demolition and road allowance associated with the structures that were damaged during the storm event on Aug 2.

Township staff stated in a report that the tornado and storm had a significant impact on a number of the properties in Wellington North.

Staff told council in a report that if they chose to waive the fees, they would be reducing the insurance claim amount for property owners.

Councillor Steve McCabe mentioned his concern that this would only benefit the insurance company and not the property owners.

“That is if they had adequate insurance,” added Mayor Andy Lennox. “That’s not often the case.”

It is estimated that $6,500 in permit fees would be waived.

Lennox then praised the township residents that came out to help after the storm.

“We’ve seen community members rise to the challenge and very quickly were on scene and helping those who were affected clean up. I’m certainly very proud to be associated with a community that looks after its residents in that way,” said Lennox.

Three tornadoes have been confirmed by Environment Canada as part of the Aug.2 storm including an EF2 tornado in Teviotdale, an EF2 tornado in Mapleton, and an EF1 tornado in Marsville.
