Wellington 4-H beef club readies for Fall Fair

The Wellington County 4-H beef club is training hard for achievement day, the Fergus Fall Fair.

On Aug. 11, the club met for showing and fitting night. The meeting was hosted by the Wallace family near Elora. Showing and fitting night is a significant meeting, where members learn tricks to prepare calves for show day.

The meeting was opened by club president Jordan Taylor,  and reciting the 4-H pledge, and new business. The members then  went  to the Wallace’s barn, where three calves that will be shown at the fair were available for practise.

Members took turns walking the calves and taking turns being the judge. The club discussed important factors and what to do in the show ring.

Next, the club watched the movie Stierwalt Style Fitting and Grooming.  The film gave information on how to groom and fit calves properly on show day.

The purpose of clipping and grooming of the cattle is to emphasize positive traits of the calf, and to improve negative physical traits.

The club enjoyed a snack courtesy  of the Schill family.
