Volunteer appreciation celebration held at Caressant Care in Harriston

A volunteer appreciation dessert celebration was held on April 8 at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Harriston.

Hosted by activities director Audrey Domm and her assistant Jaylene Roswell, volunteers were celebrated for their enthusiasm and involvement in the programs and events offered for the residents.

Volunteer Anne Darroch introduced guest speaker Tara Tuene of Drew, whose passion for music has led her to the east coast to study for a career in music therapy. Through singing, guitar and piano playing Tuene promotes the well being of clients at any age by stimulating their emotional, physical, cognitive and social responses.

Singing could help with re-learning how to speak, she explained. Singing familiar songs could calm and relax clients who suffer from Alzheimer’s or social isolation and loneliness.

Administrator Lynn Jamieson thanked Tuene for her presentation and noted she will be sharing her talents with residents as she completes her internship.

Jamieson introduced her team and thanked the volunteers for their efforts.
