Visser asks for budget on rec facility

While Puslinch councillors are excited about the prospect of a new multi-use recreational facility, at least one wants to know more about the project’s finances.

“I’ve never seen a project like that triple in price before it even got to the planning stage,” Dick Visser told council on April 15. “At some point I’d like to see a budget from the committee.” Visser was alluding to a discrepancy between the original cost estimate from the local Optimist Club – under $600,000 – and a Building Canada Fund grant application, which stated the total cost will be over $2-million.

In February, the township was awarded $1.4-million in federal and provincial funding.

Mayor Brad Whitcombe said the Optimist Club, which will be contributing over $350,000 towards the project, was involved in the process from the beginning, including financial details on the final application for funding.

Councillor Don McKay said once plans are developed for the facility, the township should host a public meeting – and incorporate plans for a proposed library expansion.
